Herniated Disc – Ayurveda

A herniated (also called slipped or ruptured) disc is a fragment of the disc nucleus which is pushed outside the ring, in the spine canal through a tear. Discs that become herniated are usually in an early stage of degeneration. The spinal canal has a limited space which is inadequate for the spinal nerve and the displaced herniated disc fragment. Due to this shift, the jukeboxes in the spinal nerves, producing often pain, which can be severe.

Herniated discs can occur anywhere in the spine. a condition more common in the lower back (lumbar) especially in the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels (L = Lumbar, S = Sacral). This is because the lumbar spine carries most of the weight of the body. The second most common area is the neck (column cervical). The area experiencing the pain depends on which part of the spine is affected.

People between the ages of 30 and 50 appear to be vulnerable because the elasticity and the core water content decreases with age. But today, even people in the group aged 20 years are also being affected because of their style life and stress.

The progression of a real hernia varies from slow to sudden onset of symptoms. There are four stages: (1) disc protrusion (2) prolapsed disc (3) disc extrusion (4) sequestered disc. Stages 1 and 2 are known as incomplete, where 3 and 4 are complete herniations. The pain resulting from hernia can be combined with a radiculopathy, which means neurological deficit. The deficit may include sensory changes (ie tingling, numbness) and / or changes motor (ie weakness, loss of reflexes). These changes are caused by nerve compression created by pressure from interior disc material.

Causes
A single excessive strain or injury can cause a herniated disc. However, disc material degenerates naturally as you age, and the ligaments that hold it in place begin to weaken. As this degeneration progresses, a relatively minor strain or twisting movement can cause a rupture disk.

Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to disc problems, and as a result may suffer herniated discs in several places along the spine. Research has shown that the predisposition of herniated discs may exist in families with multiple affected members.

Herniated disk symptoms

Symptoms vary greatly depending on the position of the herniated disc and the size of the hernia. If the herniated disc is pressing on a nerve can experience lower back pain or no pain. If you press on a nerve, there may be pain, numbness or weakness in the area of the body to which the nerve travels. In general, a herniated disc is preceded by an episode of low back pain or a history of intermittent episodes of low back pain.

The lumbar spine (back low): Sciatica often the result of a herniated disk in his lower back. The pressure on a nerve or nerves that contribute to the sciatic nerve can cause pain, burning, tingling and numbness that radiates from the buttock down the leg and sometimes in the foot. Usually one side (left or right) is affected. This pain is often described as sharp and electric shock-like. It may be more severe with standing, walking or sitting. Along with the leg pain, you may experience pain low back pain.

Cervical spine (neck): Symptoms may include dull or sharp pain in the neck or between the shoulder blades, pain radiates down the arm to the hand or fingers, or numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm. The pain may increase with certain positions or movements of the neck.

Thoracic spine: pain radiating to the chest.

Cauda equina syndrome: results from a herniated disc and severe central requires immediate surgery. The symptoms include bilateral leg pain, loss of perianal sensation (anus), paralysis of the bladder, and the weakness of the anal sphincter.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made by a physician based on history, symptoms, A physical exam and test results, including the following:

X-ray: Application of radiation to produce a film or an image of a body part can show the structure of the vertebrae and the outline of the joints. The spine radiographs are obtained to look for other causes potential of pain, ie tumors, infections, fractures, etc.

computed tomography (CT or CAT scan): A diagnosis image created after a computer reads x-rays and can show the shape and size of the spinal canal, its contents, and structures around them.

The Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A diagnostic test that produces three-dimensional images of body structures using powerful magnets and information and can show the spinal cord, nerve roots, and its surroundings as well as enlargement, degeneration and tumors.

Myleogram: An X-ray of the spinal canal after injection of contrast material in the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding areas, can show the pressure on the spinal cord or nerves due to herniated discs, bone spurs or tumors.

Electromyogram and studies nerve conduction (EMG / NCS): These tests measure the electrical impulse along nerve roots, peripheral nerves and muscle tissue. This will indicate if there is nerve damage in progress, if the nerves are in a state of healing from an injury in the past, or if there is another site of nerve compression.

Treatment

While the management of disc herniation is controversial, the first step is bed rest. For those who do not respond to rest, surgical removal of the bulging disk followed by fusion of the vertebrae is the only option in modern medicine.

Ayurveda considers a herniated disc that is the result of three major defect 'doshas' especially Vata.

Ayurveda Treatment aims to restore balance by correcting the functional basis in balance. Ayurvedic treatments for a herniated disc focus on what the aggravated vata back to equilibrium and thus health status. The treatment consists of three approaches, remove (Sodhanam) accumulated toxic products of digestion, metabolism and disease process, Pacification (Samanam) and the correction of the entities responsible for impaired functioning and Rasayanam (Rejuvenation) of body tissues to restore and maintain the natural strength and vitality.

The strength of Ayurveda in the area of spinal diseases worldwide is appreciated. Since it deals with the cause of the issue of results are better than surgical procedures.

Therapies such as swedam abyanga, Nasyam, swedam Pathrapotala, swedam Choornapinda, Pizhichil, Shirodhara, Kadeevasthy, Greevavasthy, Navarakizhi, Vasti etc. are done as needed and condition. These therapies are aimed at alleviating the inflammatory changes and hernia release spasms and nerve compressions in the area affected area, strengthening the supportive tissues holding the spine joints, nourishing the whole column and re-hydrating the discs. In general, the treatment period is 3-5 weeks according to the severity of the disease.

In four to six weeks, most patients find that their symptoms are relieved without surgery. If the patient can come for treatment early, even a complete cure without recurrence also possible.
