What most people don’t realize is that by simply withdrawing from the practice of smoking for a few weeks at a time doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve won. Both chemical and behavioral addictions to nicotine and smoking can be quite strong and subconsciously tough to deal with. And with more and more facilities producing bans on smoking, people are becoming desperate.

Clearly, nicotine patches and chewing gum are definitive solutions, and work for some, but for those who have found these methods to be ineffective, there are two highly useful ways to successfully kick the practice. Sure, you could tie yourself to a tree far away from any grocery stores for a few weeks at a time, allowing a family member supervise you while you ate and performed other healthy routines; but realistically, that just wouldn’t work.

There will always be that large percentage of our nation who’d rather step outside for a quick pull, but reports from a recent article entitled “Mich. Smoking ban drives some to seek ways to quit” (Chicago Tribune) demonstrate otherwise.

In fact, it states that people are resorting to hypnotherapy, which tackles the root of habitual smoking through the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is a specific type of therapy in which a person is subject to hypnosis, induced by a procedure typically known as hypnotic induction. While in this state, the individual is ransacked with series of questions and suggestions. Otherwise known as a state of physical relaxation and metal concentration (not to be confused with sleep), hypnosis can generally be utilized to subdue the urge to smoke.

Additionally, it has been found that many people have ventured into the field of acupuncture to lessen their addictive behaviors. Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and changing needles in different points on the body to lessen pain therapeutically. For years now, acupuncture has been scrutinized by scientists for its effectiveness; most opponents state that it could be attributed to a placebo effect. To the contrary however, people in Michigan are beginning to see results. Reverting back to the article mentioned above, President of Acupuncture Healthcare Associates of Michigan Inc Julie Silver, points out a slight increase in business since the recent ban.

Nationwide, people are finding rising taxes on tobacco, which is causing a real financial epidemic for a handful of smokers. Consciously speaking, almost everybody knows how to stop smoking – Simply don’t buy the cigarettes and/or use them. But kicking the actual addiction is much more complicated than most think, and with great practices like acupuncture and hypnotherapy, it’s very much possible. Most hypnotherapists and acupuncturists say that with only a few sessions, a lifetime of soberness from tobacco can be achieved. The most important element of quitting lies in the willingness of the patient to quit, and costs of quitting can build quickly. Despite, practices like acupuncture and hypnotherapy might be worth looking into.
